I’ve always wanted to write a book and couldn’t figure out the thing that was going to drive me forward to do it until I realized I had this perspective that not a lot of people had, on something that was a big part of culture right now. How much did your own experience influence the book?Ī. It’s hard not to notice the similarity between her experience and your own. April May becomes famous through her YouTube videos. And I think that ultimately, many of the difficulties that we’re having as a culture right now have to do with the isolation and loneliness that comes of believing that we can be part of society without actually interacting with another human because we think we are engaging by shouting at each other on the Internet. In combination, fear and the Internet can be very isolating. I think that every story deals with fear in some way, but the way that the Internet allows for very rapid communication and connection and creation means that it is easier to stoke fear.īecause attention is the ultimate commodity, and fear gathers attention, or scary things gather attention, those things will find an audience and they will be created. How does fear play a role in the book, and what role do you see fear playing in the Internet and society at large?Ī. Fear is one of the defining human instincts, and how we react to it has a huge impact on who we become as individuals and also as a broader culture. Her video goes viral and sparks hysteria about what the work is and where it came from. Your book begins when the protagonist, April May, discovers a sculpture that has mysteriously popped up on a New York street and films it. While council members can’t comment directly on a proposed project, they can certainly indicate unwillingness to entertain a proposal that has overwhelming public opposition.

Another 100 people turned out at the Octocouncil meeting to voice their opposition during public comment at the beginning of the meeting. An impressive 150 people attended the city council meeting a year ago with signs, posters, and colorful costumes where we presented petitions with 4680 signatures opposing the project.

Opposition to the project has been widespread and is growing. Mere tinkering with details will not address unacceptable impacts from the project, which include worsening of the daily traffic jams on Highway 1, loss of scenic coastal views, and paving over precious open space and prime farmland. These revisions are under review by city staff we expect that the project has not changed significantly. What’s Happeningĭevelopers Weed and Vidovich have submitted revisions to their luxury hotel/conference center and RV park along both sides of Young Avenue west of Highway 1. It’s imperative we continue to remind the Half Moon Bay City Council members of the public’s opposition to the project. Despite a virtual tidal wave of opposition to the proposed massive hotel and RV park complex at Dunes Beach, developers Steven Weed and John Vidovich have not heeded the public’s call to work with the city for protection of this important open space.
